Kate is in Osaka to kill an officer of a powerful yakuza syndicate, but Kate resists taking the shot because a child has unexpectedly accompanied him. After she was left orphaned as a child, Varrick raised her as a father figure, giving her extensive training in weapons and combat and eventually inducting her into his private team of wetwork specialists. It goes to show you just how significant the limited-series races are for the industry right now-in Hollywood, it’s usually the other way around.Kate is an assassin and expert sniper who eliminates targets chosen by her trusted mentor and handler, Varrick. Compare this to the male side of things, where a good chunk of the main contenders- Joel Edgerton in The Underground Railroad, Hugh Grant in The Undoing, Paul Bettany in WandaVision-play second leads to actresses in their respective series. The lineup is too stacked to even really get into the long shot chances for, say, Amanda Peet, terrific as Betty Broderick in the otherwise middling sequel to Dirty John, or Kate Mara, sharp and subtle in FX on Hulu’s polarizing A Teacher. Whether Olsen could beat out some of the above players, accordingly, is even more of an uncertainty.
The big open question is how the Emmys will regard a Marvel product, one that increasingly resembles a Marvel product as it progresses. Olsen’s turn as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch was highly regarded and surprising at every turn, effortlessly oscillating between the series’ many modes. The actor’s once-supporting, hardly awards-buzzed role in various Marvel films got a thrilling makeover in the studio’s ambitious, weird, twisty Disney+ debut, WandaVision, which mixed clever riffs on classic sitcoms with a new chapter in the MCU.

Amazon is heavily pushing The Underground Railroad, however, and there’s no questioning Mbedu’s ferocity in the role.Īll this and we haven’t even mentioned the name repping the biggest limited series of the year: Elizabeth Olsen. Erivo has been here before, in a way: The above description rather neatly matches the film Harriet, in which she played another historical icon, and Erivo still went on to nab a best-actress Oscar nod for it.
Erivo, playing Aretha Franklin, takes on a conventional, flawed biopic that doesn’t have much of a place in the conversation otherwise Mbedu is the face of one of the year’s most challenging, impressive projects that some in the still-somewhat-conservative Academy may not give much of a chance. They’re almost opposite contenders, with their towering performances the only meeting point. (Plus, Winslet’s accent will nab a few votes on its own.) In fact, she’s got the most heat of anyone vying for a slot here, so even a win isn’t out of the question if Winslet can sustain that momentum.Ī few other stars coming on strong: Cynthia Erivo for Genius: Aretha and Thuso Mbedu for The Underground Railroad. But Winslet should have an edge over her fellow Emmy-winning HBO star, due to both recency and acclaim- Mare found more overall love with critics and discussion around it extended well beyond the pulp, which we can’t quite say in The Undoing’s case. As King reminded, the Television Academy isn’t afraid to quickly repeat victors here-good news for Kidman, whose The Undoing generated a ton of buzz back in the fall, and Mare’s Winslet, winner for the 2011 Todd Haynes period piece Mildred Pierce.
